The YMCA name, through CYQ, is established as the a specialist and leading awarding body for health and fitness specific qualifications. We believe CYQ to be a striking example of our commitment to quality, both in educational services and in the opportunities that result for holders of hard earned, highly respected qualifications.

To date, over 100,000 fitness professionals have trained and gained a CYQ qualification and you’ll find YMCA graduates working in every area of the fitness industry. Currently CYQ offers many different qualifications, awarded through hundreds of colleges and training providers throughout the UK and also abroad.

A Brief History

CYQ grew out of YMCA Training & Development (YMCA T&D), established at the Central YMCA Club in the early 1980s. It was there a group of visionary educators became inspired by the exercise to music phenomena sweeping the UK and USA. In response to demand from aspiring  aerobics teachers, a course on how to teach studio classes to music was set up – the rest is partly history and very much our future!  In 1994 a change in government policy lead to the break up of YMCA T&D which became two separate charities, YMCA Fitness Industry Training and CYQ.
