Activities right now at the Y
The Central YMCA Club is a large and well equipped facility, and probably offers the most visible examples of what this charity is all about – superb staff and volunteers, working in all sorts of creative and practical ways to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. “A fully equipped Pilates Studio, large cardio theatre and new resistance training equipment are among the recent additions that keep Central YMCA way ahead of the field…every type of workout is available, all taught to a consistently high standard” It is relatively easy to write about the shiny new equipment, the sparkling deep-blue pool or in fact, any of the facilities, but what really makes the Club special is a unique atmosphere - friendly, inclusive, welcoming combined with highly qualified and we hope inspirational team of staff and volunteers. Plus, of course it is more than a gym... “The Club also has an extensive education and activity programme ranging from language classes to canoeing, pottery to photography, plus a chapel, therapy rooms and a decent café” If you are ever in central London, pop in and have a look for yourself! |

A Brief History The Central YMCA Club traces its routes to the very start of the YMCA movement in 1844, in London, England. 51 years after the start, in 1895, the founding London YMCAs Aldersgate Street, Cornhill and Exeter Hall YMCAs merged to become London Central YMCA – us! In 1912 London Central YMCA moved to 112 Great Russell Street, WC1, and we are still here. The 1912 ‘London Central YMCA Hostel’ was a purpose built hostel and gym, complete with library, swimming pool and shooting gallery! In 1977 a new building was opened on the site, which provided access and facilities for women members, and though much enhanced, this is what you see today. |
